The Importance of Your Role as a Parent at Goldie’s Youth Sports

You are more than a spectator. Every moment you show up — on the sideline, in the car ride home, at the postgame snack — is an opportunity to shape your daughter’s experience in ways that last far beyond the season.

At Goldie’s Youth Sports, we believe that parents are partners in our mission. The words you choose, the energy you bring, and the example you set all become part of your daughter’s story. Every “touch” — every interaction, reaction, and conversation — is a chance to build her character, her confidence, and her sense of community.

When you cheer with encouragement instead of criticism, she learns that effort matters more than outcome. When you model grace in a tough loss, she learns resilience. When you connect with other families on the sideline, you build the village that lifts every child — not just your own.

Your daughter is watching you. Not just when she scores, but when things don’t go her way. Not just during the game, but in how you speak about her teammates, her coaches, and the other team. You are not just raising an athlete. You are raising a leader.

Practices — Where Growth Happens

Practices are the heartbeat of the season. This is where your daughter learns more than basketball — she learns how to show up, work hard, support her teammates, and push through challenges. Every drill, every scrimmage, and every coach’s word is building something bigger than a skill set.

As a parent, your role at practice is simple and powerful: trust the process. Drop her off with encouragement, pick her up with curiosity. Ask her what she learned, what made her laugh, what felt hard. Let her own her experience on the court so she can grow into it with confidence.

Please ensure your daughter arrives on time, dressed and ready to participate. Consistent attendance matters — not just for her development, but for her teammates who count on her.

Games — Set the Tone Before, During & After

At GYS, we’re committed to building a positive, safe, and encouraging environment where every player, regardless of skill level, feels supported and excited to grow. As the season continues, we want to remind everyone of the critical role parents and spectators play in shaping the experience for our young athletes.

Our players watch and learn from us. Your energy and attitude help shape how they see teamwork, competition, and character. Please take a moment to watch this powerful 4-minute video from a child’s perspective: The Truth of Sports Parents – Through the Eyes of a Child. Also here is a video for helpful suggestions for making the car ride home a positive experience.

Before the Game: Be encouraging. Remind your player that effort matters more than results. Avoid last-minute instructions or added pressure — she’s ready.

During the Game: Cheer for hustle and teamwork. Do not coach from the sidelines — it confuses players and undermines the coaches. Let the referees do their job and avoid negative comments of any kind.

After the Game: Stay positive. No criticizing referees, coaches, or players — especially in front of your child. Focus on effort, growth, and team support.

Let the Coaches Coach. When parents coach from the sidelines, it creates confusion for players trying to follow two sets of instructions, frustration among teammates, and chaos during plays and game decisions. Trust our coaches to lead the team. Your role is to support, not instruct.

Behavior to Avoid: To keep the gym a safe and respectful space for everyone, please avoid yelling at referees, criticizing players, coaching from the stands, confronting refs or coaches, and making negative remarks in front of players.

Every game is a chance to model composure, respect, and good sportsmanship. Let’s lead with positivity and show our athletes what it means to be great teammates — on and off the court.

The Post-Game Meeting — Why It Matters

After every game, teams gather for a brief post-game meeting. This is one of the most important moments of the entire week — and we ask that parents honor it by giving their daughters space to be part of it fully.

The post-game meeting is where players learn to reflect, celebrate effort, and support one another regardless of the score. Coaches guide players through what went well, what they can build on, and how they showed up as a team. This ritual teaches girls how to process competition with grace — a life skill that extends far beyond basketball.

Please do not interrupt or pull your daughter away from the post-game meeting. Let her be present with her team. The conversations that happen in that circle are the ones she’ll carry with her long after the season ends.

End of Season Community Day — Celebrating the Whole Journey

The final chapter of our season is our Community Day — a celebration of everything our girls have built together. More than a basketball event, it is a gathering of families, coaches, and players who have spent a season growing, competing, and lifting each other up.

Community Day is a moment to pause and recognize that what happened this season was bigger than wins and losses. Your daughter learned to lead, to lose, to try again, and to belong. She found her voice on the court and her place in a community that sees her.

We invite every family to attend, celebrate, and connect. Bring your energy, your gratitude, and your pride — not just for your daughter, but for every girl on every team. Because at GYS, we rise together.

Thank you for being part of the GYS family. We appreciate your support in helping create an environment where all kids can grow, thrive, and love the game. Together, every touch counts.
